Mary Elizabeth Carlsen
12/5/1937 – 10/7/2024
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Carlsen, age 86.
Born on December 5, 1937, in South Bend, Indiana, Mary was raised in her favorite place Brooklyn, NY, by her mother Mary J, grandmother Elizabeth and her Aunt Margaret. Mary’s younger brother Edward Chapland passed away in 2004.
Mary was married to her beloved husband, Lawrence (Sonny), for 50 wonderful years until his passing in 2002. Together, they shared a life of love, and laughter and lively banter. Mary spent most of her adult life in Brooklyn and Queens before moving to Wantagh in 1991. She was the loving mother of Debra and Catherine. She is also survived by her nieces Lisa Chapland, goddaughters Jeanne Picano and Denise Hudak, the Carlsen family and the special extended family of Anne and Michael Browne among other family members.
Mary worked throughout her life and enjoyed the social elements of working, shopping, being out and about and living life. Mary is survived by her lifelong friend Bernie Michelsson and sister-in-law’s Rosemary Carlsen and Pat Martinez who each shared in the joyous and challenging moments throughout Mary’s life.
Mary’s kindness, spirit, laughter and love will forever be remembered by all who knew her and who were fortunate enough to be a part of her life.
