Arena, Salvatore (Sammy) 1/12/1932. Son of Bella (nee Torres) and Vito Arena, he passed away peacefully at home on 2/19/2025 at the age of 93. He was predeceased by Rae (nee D’Angelo), his beloved wife of 70 years and his cherished son, Peter Paul. He will be so missed by his son Victor and daughter-in-law Jane, his grandchildren Peter (Kiira), Kara and Daniel and great granddaughters Josephine and Elowyn, brother-in-law Peter (Peg) D’Angelo, and many nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by his sister-in-law Mary Trapani (Benedict).
Dad was a very proud member of Local 731 for over 50 years, and his years as a well-respected shop steward enabled him to provide jobs for many workers, opening a path for them to the middle class. He was a mentor to many until his retirement at age 73. His good advice to his grandchildren was to ‘make your boss’s job as easy as possible.
His life revolved around his family, he was completely devoted to Rae and his sons, and later, wherever his grandchildren were, you were sure to find him. He was outgoing and loved to chat with whoever came his way, he could fix almost anything and loved to lend a helping hand. He was a stellar example of unselfish love, and we were blessed with his presence in our lives.
A wake will be held at Wantagh Abbey on Friday 2/28 from 5pm-8pm, funeral mass on Saturday 3/1 at St. Frances De Chantal, Wantagh at 10:45, burial immediately following mass at St. Boniface Cemetery in Elmont.

Joseph S. Calagna, 82, of Wantagh, NY, passed away on February 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with several serious medical conditions. In recent years, he demonstrated incredible courage in the face of life’s challenges, always facing adversity with a smile.
Born in Queens, NY, on May 20, 1942, Joe was the youngest of two children. He was predeceased by his older brother, Anthony, who was also his mentor.
A dedicated family man, Joe is survived by his wife, Victoria, and their son, Joseph (Emily), who remained by his side until his passing. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Gloria, and sons David and Thomas (Kerri).
Joe was a proud graduate of the Wharton School of Business. After graduating, he and his brother Tony founded Calagna Development Corp., where they built over 50 homes in the Smithtown area. Later in life, he became the CFO of Thompson Leeds Display Co.
Joe was an avid boater and fisherman, with a deep love for the water. He passed this passion on to his youngest son, Joseph, who continues in his footsteps. Joe was a long-time member of
the Freeport Yacht Club, where he formed lasting friendships and created cherished memories. Joe was also a talented cook, with a special knack for creating delicious meals at a moment’s notice. Whether it was a pot of soup on a chilly day or a gourmet dinner, the house always smelled of sautéed garlic and vegetables. Cooking and entertaining family were his true joys.
In retirement, Joe took up painting with watercolors, creating pieces that were cherished by family and friends. His artwork was always inspired by subjects that held deep meaning for the recipient.
Joe’s memory lives on with his nieces and nephews: Anthony, Christine, Renee, Michael, Nicholas, and Amanda; his grandchildren: Sean, Kalie, and Michael; and his great-niece and
great-nephew: Emma Rose and Robby John.
